The dryer vent is easy to forget because it works silently — until it doesn't. By the time most homeowners call, the blockage is severe enough to affect drying performance or, worse, create a genuine fire risk. Here are the five warning signs I see most often in Charlotte homes.
1. Clothes Take More Than One Cycle
If a full load of laundry consistently needs two cycles to dry, restricted airflow is almost certainly the cause. Heat that can't exhaust properly stays in the drum, leaving clothes damp and costing you extra on the utility bill.
2. The Dryer or the Wall Behind It Feels Unusually Hot
Heat backed up in a clogged vent has nowhere to go except back into the appliance and surrounding surfaces. A dryer exterior or laundry room wall that feels hot to the touch is a serious warning sign.
3. There's a Burning Smell During or After a Cycle
That smell is lint — a highly flammable material — being heated past the point it should be. If you detect any burning odor from the dryer or nearby vents, stop using the appliance and have the vent inspected immediately.
4. The Vent Flap Outside Doesn't Open When the Dryer Runs
On a clear vent, the exterior flap opens visibly when the dryer is on. If it barely moves or stays closed, airflow is blocked somewhere along the run.
5. It Has Been More Than a Year Since the Last Cleaning
The NFPA recommends annual dryer vent cleaning. In Charlotte townhomes and larger homes with longer vent runs, twice a year is not unreasonable. If you can't remember the last cleaning, it has been too long.
